How much does proceedings before the ECHR cost?
What legal fees should I expect before the ECHR?
We can limit the cost of proceedings before the ECHR by proposing a capped fixed fee whenever possible. This is often the best and cheapest solution: we propose to limit the cost of proceedings by setting a fixed fee for a lawyer at the ECHR whenever the case allows.
What is the usual cost of proceedings before the ECHR?
For a quick estimate of our fees, take all the costs paid to supreme court lawyer and subtract between 25% and 50% (this variation depends on the rate applied by the last law firm ).
This is obviously a simple illustration, non-contractual, to give an order of magnitude. We will provide you with a precise and personalised estimate for referral to the ECHR before any collaboration.
Flat-rate fees before the ECHR
Are lawyers’ fees before the ECHR expensive?
Lawyers’ fees before the ECHR can be high, so it is more advantageous to offer flat-rate fees, i.e. fees that do not vary according to the time spent on the case or the length of the proceedings.
We take great care to adapt to our clients’ stakes and financial means.
By way of comparison, law firms comparable to us in terms of reputation and experience generally charge fees that are twice as high as those we charge*.
*Estimate based on claims for reimbursement of lawyers’ fees filed with the ECHR and invoices produced by litigants.
Why choose our flat-rate lawyers?
Because you’ll get the best possible specialists at the best possible price.

ECHR lawyers’ fees: legal expenses insurance
Can legal expenses insurance pay for a lawyer’s fees before the ECHR?
The costs of lawyers before the ECHR are covered by many insurance policies, which include legal protection cover or a defence clause, depending on the policy.
A large proportion of lawyers’ fees are then covered.
This cover for lawyers’ fees may be included :
- as part of a ‘standard’ insurance policy (comprehensive home insurance, civil liability insurance, motor insurance, etc.),
- as an appendix to an insurance policy: in this case, it is a separate clause with separate premiums,
- in a specific insurance contract called ‘legal protection insurance’.
In all cases, our lawyers always advise all litigants to check their insurance policies for the presence of such cover.
This guarantee, which enables you to pay your lawyer, may be included in various insurance policies (home insurance, car insurance, credit cards, supplementary health insurance, etc.).
Depending on the type of insurance, it may cover all or part of the lawyer’s fees, as well as bailiff’s fees and, possibly, the fees of a technical expert.
ECHR lawyers’ fees: hourly rate
What are the fees for a lawyer before the ECHR if you opt for an hourly rate?
Hourly rates are not suitable for private individuals, who often prefer flat-rate fees, which offer better visibility of the final cost.
The hourly rate is best suited to :
- drafting short legal documents,
- legal advice (consultation on the admissibility of an appeal, audit of a point of law, etc.).
General rules applicable to lawyers’ fees in France
Fees are set freely by agreement between the lawyer and his client (article 10 of the law of 31 December 1971).
The essential criteria are :
- the time spent and the difficulty of the case
- the value of the dispute and the result obtained,
- the client’s financial situation,
- whether the client is covered by legal expenses insurance.
